Weddings are all about taking your relationship to the next level. You found the one and you’re ready to commit. Your special day will revolve around so many relationships– the florist, the caterer, the DJ, and most importantly, your photographer. After all, the images your photographer captures will be a time capsule as you reminisce back to your very memorable day. Make sure you share the same vision for what those memories will entail.

Communication
As with every relationship, communication is key. If you don’t clarify exactly what you’re looking for, then you will not be happy with the results. Some couples are seeking a more photo-journalist approach, while others are seeking the perfectly posed image. Make sure you are specific and be sure to show examples of what it is you desire. Equally important, you should explore your photographer’s images and let them know which ones you prefer. Often times, photographers will have a specific vision in mind, but it is just as important that they know what you’re looking for. Frequently, this communication will be left to the bride, but it is very important that the groom be included in the process.

Trust
Reputation is important and you should do your homework before choosing a photographer. With the power of the internet, everyone is free to express their opinion, and these reviews could be beneficial for you. Rants and raves are equally important, but shouldn’t necessarily be taken at face value. One bad review doesn’t mean this photographer won’t work for you, but be sure that they aren’t notorious for failing to deliver images, poor image editing skill, faulty equipment, promptness, or the like.

Expectations
Asking the right questions is the key to the desired result. How long will she take to deliver the images? Is there a second photographer provided and at what additional charge (if any)? What will he need from you? Be sure to review the contract carefully. Many photographers will have long contracts to ensure all of their requirements are met, but if you have questions or concerns be sure to ask for clarification. Commonly included is an exclusivity agreement that makes it appear as though no one is allowed to take pictures during the event. This clause is typically included to ensure the photographer is able to capture the images you want without obstructions or distractions. If you want something included in the contract, be sure to mention it, as this ensures both you and the photographer will have the same expectations.

You wouldn’t enter into a marriage without communication, trust, and clear expectations, so don’t expect any less from your relationship with your photographer.
